The Blooming Grove Volunteer Ambulance Corps (BGVAC) Training Center will regularly offer American Heart Association courses at its bay. These classes are open to the general public, and emergency response personnel. The Ambulance Corps provides these classes at a nominal, affordable charge. All classes taught on-site at the ambulance bay are taught by volunteer instructors.

Students may provide their own face masks for those courses requiring face masks. If students do not bring a face mask to each session, they must purchase a face mask from the training center for $15.

All courses will be held at the Blooming Grove Volunteer Ambulance Corps bay at 7 North Street in Washingtonville (next to the Stewarts Ice Cream Shop).

What classes are offered?

AHA means the course is developed and administered through the American Heart Association. ASHI means the course is developed and administered through the American Safety and Health Institute.

Classes for the General Community:

CPR for Family and Friends (AHA)

Description: The CPR for Friends and Family course targets all lay rescuers, such as school children, family members of patients at risk for sudden cardiac death, and other laypersons who want to learn rescue skills for loved ones. The course teaches rescue skills in CPR and relief of foreign-body airway obstruction (FBAO). It presents information about the AHA Chain of Survival and signs of heart attack, cardiac arrest, stroke, and choking in adults. The text includes information about healthy living and actions to reduce risk of cardiovascular disease in adults. The course also presents information about the AHA pediatric Chain of Survival, signs of choking in infants and children, prevention of sudden infant death syndrome, and prevention of the most common fatal injuries in infants and children. NO certification card is given with this course.

BLS Heartsaver (AHA)

Description: This entry-level course offers guidelines for one-rescuer adult, child, and infant cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). The course includes information on first aid for choking. Other topics covered are the Chain of Survival, normal heart and lung anatomy and function, how to recognize a heart attack, stroke warning signs, and recommendations for prudent heart living.

Class duration: 7 hours

HS First Aid (AHA)

Description: The Heartsaver First Aid Course provides the skills to effectively assess and maintain life from the critical minutes immediately following an emergency until the arrival of emergency medical services personnel. The course also provides corporations with a complete health and safety training solution for First Aid, CPR and AED. The Heartsaver First Aid Course has been developed using the same evidence-based process as all American Heart Association Emergency Cardiovascular Care courses. Course Description The Heartsaver First Aid Course teaches rescuers to effectively recognize and treat adult emergencies in the critical first minutes until emergency medical services personnel arrive. The course also provides a complete health and safety training solution for first aid, adult CPR and AED.

Heartsaver CPR in Schools (AHA)

Description: The Heartsaver CPR in Schools course is designed to teach both adult and pediatric (infant/child) lay rescuer CPR to middle or high school students. The course presents information about the AHA adult Chain of Survival and signs of heart attack, cardiac arrest, stroke and choking in adults. The manual includes information about healthy heart living and actions to reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease in adults. The course also provides information about the AHA infant and child Chain of Survival, signs of choking in infants and children, prevention of suddent infant death syndrome, and prevention of the most common fatal injuries in infants and children. It teaches rescuers skills in CPR and relief of foreign-body airway obstruction (FBAO).

Class duration: 9 - 40 minutes modules taught at the school.

Classes for the EMS and Healthcare Providers:

BLS Healthcare Provider (AHA)

Description: The BLS Healthcare Provider course is designed to meet the needs of healthcare professionals who respond to cardiac and respiratory emergencies. The content of this course includes adult and pediatric CPR, foreign-body airway obstruction, and two-rescuer CPR. The course contains new information on barrier devices, stroke, and automated external defibrillation, including a new algorithm for use of automated external defibrillators.

Automated External Defibrillation + Emergency Oxygen Administration

Description: Training includes recognition of unresponsive victims, review of equipment operation and maintenance, discussion of treatment and valuable hands-on practice to increase skill. This class also provides information for complying with the FDA requirement for training in oxygen administration. This class is beneficial for laypersons and medical professionals providing step-by-step instructions for oxygen administration.

Heartsaver AED (AHA)

Description: Heartsaver AED, A Comprehensive Course for the First Responder, is designed to teach CPR, use of an automated external defribrillator (AED), and relief of foriegn-body airway obstruction (FBAO) to all lay rescuers, particulary those who are expected to respond to emergencies in the workplace. It is specifically designed for lay rescuers who are required to obtain a course completion card (a credential) documenting completion of a CPR AED course.

Bloodborne Pathogens

Description: This program includes information that will help students understand what bloodborne pathogens are and how risks of exposure can be reduced for themselves and others. Participants are introduced to precautionary practices that are recommended by organizations such as the Occupational Safety and Health Administration and the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Basic First Aid + Emergency Oxygen Administration (ASHI)

Description: Properly applied first aid can save lives, reduce recovery time and quite possibly mean the difference between temporary disability or lifelong disability for the victim. Program participants learn to recognize the signs and symptoms of injuries and sudden illness. Crucial information about how to deal with emergencies like shock, burns, strains, strokes and seizures is shared. This class also provides information for complying with the FDA requirement for training in oxygen administration. This class is beneficial for laypersons and medical professionals providing step-by-step instructions for oxygen administration.

Healthcare Provider Recertification (AHA)

Description: This course is intended for those who already hold a valid Professional CPR certification card and wish to renew it. AHA recommends renewal every two years.

Contact the Blooming Grove Training Center at 497-3186 extension 43 to enroll in any class. Please leave your NAME, PHONE NUMBER, and a time that we can reach you and we'll call you back, or, you may email us at bgvac@frontiernet.net to enroll.

We will provide course materials to each student at the beginning of the class. All students must pay the course enrollment fee by check at the start of the class. Cash or credit cards cannot be accepted for payment. Fees are not refundable unless the course is cancelled or postponed by the training center. If the course requires a mask, the student may supply their own or purchase one from the Training Center when they begin the class. Masks cost $15.
